Trompe l'oeil

Trompe l'oeil, meaning "Fool the Eye", is an area of specialty for St. John artist, Denise Wright. Denise painted the flat white wall pictured above at the St. John, Virgin Islands vacation home, "Vistaero". The painting duplicates the true existing architectural features of this beautiful home owned by Dr. and Mrs. Barsoum of Pennsylvania. The artist's whimsical approach was played out by painting within the archways the mirror image of the Caribbean scene as viewed off the deck.

An example of Trompe l'oeil art by Denise Wright. The arches match the hall arch of a private home in St. John, Virgin Islands. Denise painted the scene from her imagination, reflecting on the natural beauty of the Caribbean and her love of sailing.

St. John artist, Denise Wright has resided in the Virgin Islands since 1981. Originally from Oregon, Denise and her husband sailed their 27 foot sailboat in search of an equally beautiful, but more benign climate. Denise's natural gift has been cultivated by instruction, but she claims the success of her painting is due to intuition and inspiration. "The tranquil environment of the Virgin Islands allows me to paint on location almost any day. I choose my spot, then relax and open myself to the earth's art".
